Beaver Creek District Reports Its First Wildfire

One new wildfire, believed to be lightning caused, was discovered in the Beaver Creek fire district Wednesday evening at about 6:30 p.m. This 0.1 hectare fire, located approximately 35 kilometers northeast of Beaver Creek, was spotted by a helicopter with crew patrolling the area. The crew actioned the fire and it is expected that it will be fully extinguished by later today.

With this latest wildfire there have now been 25 fires in the territory this season burning approximately 16 hectares.

“Today and tomorrow are expected to be calm with regards to fire activity” said Duty Officer David Milne. “However, the fire danger in the central Yukon should be well into extreme over the weekend with the warming trend we are expecting in this area.”

In the Klondike district the two most recent wildfires are now considered to be contained and it is expected that the Bonanza Creek fire will be fully extinguished by later today. The fire danger rating is currently moderate for this region but is expected to go up with this weekends forecast warm weather.
