Current Fire Danger Ratings Wildfire Bulletin #16 June 24, 2008 - 10:30 AM 40 Hectare Wildfire Burning in Klondike Wilderness Zone Two new lightning caused wildfires were discovered in the Klondike fire district Monday. At approximately 5:30 p.m. a fire was located near the Ogilvie River in Dawson about 10 kilometres from the Dempster Highway. At 10:00 p.m. Monday night it was estimated the fire was 40 hectares in size. “At this point we are monitoring the fire as it is burning in a wilderness zone,” said Duty Officer Dave Milne. “The Ogilvie River highway maintenance camp is approximately 10 kilometres east of the fire so a structural protection plan has been developed in cooperation with the department of Highways and Public Works.” The second fire discovered Monday was located by a crew of Wildland Fire Management firefighters patrolling in a helicopter. The small fire, just 0.1 hectares in size, is located in the Fresno Creek area close to the “Top of the World” highway. Upon locating the wildfire crews immediately actioned it and were able to quickly contain it and it is expected to full extinguished by Tuesday afternoon. These two incidents bring the wildfire total to 28 burning approximately 58 hectares of forest. Currently the fire danger rating is low across much of the territory with the exception of Old Crow which is at the extreme level. The public is reminded that a burning permit is required to burn grass, brush or debris in the territory between April 1 and September 30. Permits will be suspended when the fire danger rating is moderate or higher. Wildland Fire Management would also like to thank the public for their continued cooperation in reporting wildfires.
