Wildfire Bulletin #22

July 14, 2008 - 11:00 AM

Crews Quick to Contain Two Human Caused Fires

Two new wildfires were discovered in the territory over the weekend. On Saturday evening at about 7:00 p.m. a half-hectare fire was discovered in the Watson Lake fire district by the Transport lookout tower. This fire was the result of a member of the public burning with an expired permit. It was actioned, contained and turned over to the land owner to be extinguished.

The second weekend fire was a spot sized incident discovered in the Ross River district near Peel River at around 11:30 Sunday morning. This fire, likely caused by an abandoned campfire, was discovered by a member of the public, actioned by a crew and is now extinguished.

“We would like to stress to the public how important it is to be responsible whenever they are doing any kind of burning,” said Duty Officer Mike Sparks. “Right now the fire danger rating is low to moderate throughout the territory, but gusty winds can still spread a fire quite quickly.”

With this recent activity there have now been 53 wildfires in the territory this season, burning over 15,000 hectares of forest.

Fire officials remind the public that they are required to obtain a burning permit to burn grass, brush or debris in the territory between April 1 and September 30. Burning permits can be obtained free of charge.

Wildland Fire Management would like to thank the public for their continued cooperation in reporting wildfires. If you see a wildfire please call 1-888-798-FIRE (3473)
