Current Fire Danger Ratings Wildfire Bulletin #24 July 17, 2008 - 11:30 AM Two more lightning caused fires discovered along the Peel River Two new wildfires have been discovered in the Old Crow district near Peel River in the Tetlit Gwich'in First Nation traditional territory. Both of these lightning caused fires were discovered by Northwest Territories fire management several days ago. One fire was assessed yesterday by Yukon Wildland fire management and determined to be about 250 hectares in size. The other fire will be assessed later today. A fire crew in the area will continue to monitor these fires and provide structural protections plans if any values are determined to be at risk. “The weather is expected to be quite warm and dry in the north today and with that these fires will continue to be quite active,” said Duty Officer Dave Milne. “Fortunately we can expect quite a bit of rain over the weekend and that should bring the fire danger rating down.” The Old Crow district has seen the most fire activity this season with these recent fires bringing the total for the region to 16. Throughout the territory there have now been 55 wildfires burning nearly 15 000 hectares of forest. Fire officials remind the public, especially those campers going to the Dawson City music festival over the weekend, to use caution with any burning and fully extinguish all campfires before leaving the site. The public is also reminded that they are required to obtain a burning permit to burn grass, brush or debris in the territory between April 1 and September 30. Burning permits can be obtained free of charge. Wildland Fire Management would like to thank the public for their continued cooperation in reporting wildfires.
