Current Fire Danger Ratings Wildfire Bulletin #31 August 12, 2008 - 3:30 PM Watson Lake Wildfire Activity Continues Two new fires have been discovered in the territory in the past 24 hours. A fire was discovered in the Watson Lake District at about 5:30 p.m., Monday afternoon. The three hectare fire is located about 100 kilometers northwest of Watson Lake and was discovered from the lookout tower. A helicopter with an initial attack crew and the birddog aircraft responded to the fire, it was assessed upon arrival and no further action has been taken as the fire is currently burning in a wilderness zone, and away from several cabins located approximately five kilometers east of the fire. “We will continue to monitor this fire in the days to come,” said Duty Officer Lorne Harris. “Fortunately the weather has become quite cloudy and cool in the area and that should slow the recent rash of activity we have seen in the Watson Lake District.” This fire was the fifth lightning caused fire in the area in the past several days. The other new fire was discovered yesterday morning in the Ross River district. This 0.1 hectare fire was found by members of the public about 10 kilometers northeast of Ross River along the North Canol Highway. This fire was human caused and has now been fully extinguished. There have now been 64 fires in the Yukon this summer burning more than 18,000 hectares of forest. The public is reminded that they are required to obtain a burning permit to burn grass, brush or debris in the territory between April 1 and September 30 and burning permits are suspended wherever the fire danger rating is moderate or higher. Wildland Fire Management would like to thank the public for their continued cooperation in reporting wildfires.
