Firefighters Prevent Growth on Mayo Fire

Firefighters from Pelly, Dawson, Haines Junction and Mayo were successful Thursday in preventing a 60 hectare fire from threatening nearby recreational properties. The lightning caused fire was first reported Wednesday evening and quickly grew from three hectares to 60.

“Ground crews, with support from various aircraft are in the process of securing the perimeter around the fire and preventing the fire from growing,” said Yukon Duty Officer Dave Milne. “This fire is not yet under control, but there was little open flame Thursday and the weather forecast over the next few days should be favorable and enable us to achieve our objectives.”

This morning 15 firefighters returned to the site along with two helicopters and they will action the fire throughout the day. The fire remains 20 kilometres from the community of Mayo.

Meanwhile, the Dominion Creek lightning caused fire reported in the Dawson district Wednesday was officially called out yesterday.  Fire officials are continuing to monitor the Valley Creek lightning caused fire burning in the Dawson district. The fire is now estimated at 100 hectares but is burning in a wilderness zone 85 kilometres southeast of Dawson and no values are currently at risk.

Despite recent precipitation in much of the territory and a subsequent drop in danger ratings as a result fire officials are urging citizens to be vigilant with fires in the territory and reminds the public that they are required to obtain a burning permit to burn grass, brush or debris in the territory between April 1 and September 30. Burning permits will be suspended if the fire danger rating is moderate or higher.

This season there have been 9 fires in the territory burning approximately 162 hectares of forest.
