Current Fire Danger Ratings Wildfire Bulletin #28 July 10, 2009 - 10:30 AM Conditions Still Dry Despite Thundershowers Two more fires were discovered Thursday, bringing the fire total for the day to five. A patrol aircraft confirmed a MODIS satellite fire detection at 11:30 a.m. The 250-hectare fire burns approximately 105 kilometres south of Dawson City, near Los Angeles Creek. The second fire was reported by a passing aircraft shortly after 2:30 p.m. The fire burns near Buffalo Corrals, 51 kilometres southwest of Carmacks, and is 10 hectares in size. Both fires were lightning-caused and burn in identified Wildland Fire Management wilderness zones with no values at risk. Fire Officials are monitoring the fires. Recent increased precipitation only covered areas beneath thundershowers, and much of the Yukon is still experiencing dry conditions and a high possibility for forest fire ignition. The fire burning 65 kilometres east of Carmacks, estimated at 4015 hectares in size, has approached within three kilometers of the Robert Campbell Highway. No values are at immediate risk and the fire is moving closer to Little Salmon River. Crews began clearing an ignition line Thursday on the northwest perimeter of the fire in preparation for an anticipated burnout operation today to prevent any further spread towards the highway. Fifteen personnel and three helicopters are working the fire today. In the Dawson district, the 7-hectare fire burning near Sixty Mile Road, approximately 65 kilometres west of Dawson City, was declared out on Thursday. Additional resources from British Columbia are lending support to Wildland Fire Management with regard to the current fire situation in the territory. With the recent fire activity, there have now been 56 fires in the territory burning approximately 38, 056 hectares of forest. -30- For Yukon Wildfire updates, call 1-800-826-4750 Current Fire Danger Ratings |
