Current Fire Danger Ratings Wildfire Bulletin #2 May 12, 2008 - 12:30 PM Staff Respond to Weekend Fires in Ross River and Dawson Two wildfires were reported over the weekend in the Dawson and Ross River fire districts. Both fires are believed to be human-caused and were quickly extinguished. On Friday evening, around 6 PM, a fire was reported at the Top of the World Golf Course in Dawson City. Upon notification five crewmembers responded along with a rotary winged helicopter. The four hectare fire was quickly contained and then extinguished. “This fire is an example of just how dry the conditions are right now in the Dawson area,” said Dan Baikie, Zone Protection Manager for the Klondike fire zone. “It’s crucial the public are cautious with any kind of burning they are doing, even at this time of year.” The second fire over the weekend occurred in the Ross River fire district on Saturday night. Two houses were reported burning in the Ross River area and with a threat of the fire spreading to nearby brush three crewmembers with Wildland Fire Management were contacted and subsequently provided support to four members of the Ross River volunteer fire department. Fortunately, the fire was quickly contained by crews and then extinguished. Wildland Fire Management reminds the public that they are required to obtain a burning permit to burn grass, brush or debris in the territory between April 1 and September 30. Burning permits can be obtained free of charge from your local Fire Management offices. Wildland Fire Management would like to thank the public for their continued cooperation in reporting wildfires. If you see a wildfire please call 1-888-798-FIRE (3473). -30- For Yukon Wildfire updates, call 1-800-826-4750 Current Fire Danger Ratings |
