Firefighters Quick to Contain Two Mayo Fires

Two wildfires were reported in the Mayo fire district Monday afternoon both of which were spot size and the result of fires not being properly extinguished. Fortunately, firefighters were quick to respond to the incidents and the fires were quickly contained.

The fires, located approximated 10 kilometres south of Stewart Crossing, were first detected by a member of the public around 1 PM. Upon notification, 5 firefighters and an Area Protection Officer were dispatched.

“These fires are both examples of what can happen if you don’t properly extinguish your fires,” said Mayo Zone Protection Manager Don Hutton. “There were wind gusts up to 90 kilometres in the area and the fires were just five metres from forested area, so this could have been a much more severe situation.”

Today, firefighters are returning to the area and it is expected both fires will be called out by this afternoon. With this recent activity there have now been five wildfires in the territory this season.

Wildland Fire Management reminds the public that they are required to obtain a burning permit to burn grass, brush or debris in the territory between April 1 and September 30. Burning permits can be obtained free of charge from your local Fire Management offices.

Wildland Fire Management would like to thank the public for their continued cooperation in reporting wildfires. If you see a wildfire please call 1-888-798-FIRE (3473).
