Current Fire Danger Ratings Wildfire Bulletin #1 April 26, 2007 - 2:00 PM Personnel working on first fire of the 2007 season Yukon Wildland Fire Management personnel are working to suppress the first wildfire of the 2007 season. The fire is located in the Ross River fire district approximately 7.5 kilometres west of the Faro town limits. The fire, now estimated to be 0.5 hectares in size, was first reported in December 2006 and is believed to be human-caused and the result of a winter campfire not being completely extinguished. "This fire reiterates the importance of ensuring your fire is completely out, even when burning in the winter," said Mark Donovan, Zone Protection Manager for the Tatchun Fire Management Zone. "While this fire is presently contained there has been some recent activity and therefore we are working to extinguish it." Currently, the fire is burning approximately 500 feet from the highway and therefore smoke may be visible at times. The fire is also within the vicinity of the power line that supplies electricity to Ross River and Faro, but at this time is not threatened. Officials with the Yukon Electrical Company Limited have been notified and have visited the site. Five Wildland Fire Management personnel and equipment are currently working to suppress the fire. They will work through the day and return to the area Friday morning. Officials are confident the fire will be fully contained within the next 48 hours. This fire marks the first of the 2007 fire season. Wildland Fire Management would like to thank the public for their cooperation in reporting wildfires. -30- For Yukon Wildfire updates, call 1-800-826-4750 Current Fire Danger Ratings |
