Current Fire Danger Ratings Wildfire Bulletin #2 May 14, 2007 - 9:30 AM Dry and Windy Conditions Result in Two Weekend Wildfires Yukon Wildland Fire Management personnel are working to suppress two new wildfires in the territory, both reported Sunday afternoon. The first incident was reported at 4:30 pm in the Carmacks district, near the Eagle Rock area and is approximately two hectares in size. Upon notification of the human-caused fire a three-person crew from Carmacks was dispatched as well as a three-person crew from Whitehorse and a helicopter. The fire is burning in steep terrain but is currently contained. Today, six firefighters and an Area Protection Officer will be returning to the fire, along with a water truck. The second incident Sunday was reported shortly at approximately 5:30 pm and is burning in the Tatchun Fire Management Zone, west of Ross River. This fire was also human-caused and was called in by two hunters in the area. The actual size of the fire is not known at this time but will be assessed this morning by fire officials. “Currently the conditions are dry and windy in many parts of the territory,” said Yukon Wildland Fire Management Head of Fire Mike Sparks. “Despite the cooler temperatures in the territory it doesn’t take much to get a fire going right now, therefore we are urging the public that are planning to burn to be cautious.” Yukoners are reminded that burning permits are required for the burning of brush and debris between April 1 and September 30. Please contact your local district for information on obtaining a burning permit. With this most recent activity there have now been four wildfires in the territory this season. -30- For Yukon Wildfire updates, call 1-800-826-4750 Current Fire Danger Ratings |
