Careless Burning the Cause of Fifth Fire of the Season

Yukon Wildland Fire Management personnel are working to suppress a human-caused wildfire burning in the Kluane Fire Management Zone.

The incident was reported by a First Nations contract crew on patrol in the area at approximately 4:30 pm Monday afternoon and is located near Marshall Creek, 15 kilometres east of Haines Junction. Upon notification of the fire three crews were dispatched with pump and hose. They worked quickly to contain the fire and today a four-person First Nations contract crew will be returning to the sight to monitor the situation.

Although the fire is currently estimated to be only .02 hectares in size, it could have been problematic as there were some values in the area.

“This fire is a concern because it believed to be the result of someone with a burning permit not properly extinguishing their fire,” said Duty Officer Lorne Harris. “Anyone planning to burn needs to know that the conditions are very dry out there right now and therefore all fires must be properly extinguished.”

This latest incident marks the fifth wildfire of the 2007 season, all of which have been human-caused.

Meanwhile, officials have declared the wildfire in Carmacks, first reported Sunday, under control and it is expected to be completely extinguished within the next 48 hours.

Yukoners are reminded that burning permits are required for the burning of brush and debris between April 1 and September 30. Please contact your local district for information on obtaining a burning permit.
