Wildfire Bulletin #6

May 22, 2007 - 10:25 AM

Suspension of Burning Permits Extended to Most of Territory

Wildland Fire Management officials have suspended burning permits throughout the territory, with the exception of Old Crow. The ban on permits is the result of the current moderate to extreme fire danger rating across the Yukon and the warm temperatures and limited precipitation forecast.

As standard with the issuance of burning permits in the Yukon, burning is only permitted during periods of low fire danger. Currently the conditions range from moderate in the Watson Lake area to extreme in the Dawson City and Mayo area.

This suspension of burning permits will be in effect until the fire danger rating drops to low and no new burning permits will be issued under the current conditions.

For further information on burning permits please contact your local district office.

Meanwhile, fire officials are pleased to report that there were no new wildfires reported over the Victoria Day long weekend.

“It is encouraging to see the public doing their part,” said Yukon Duty Officer Al Beaver. “With the warmer temperatures and the increased number of campers there is always the potential for fire activity.”

The public is reminded to be cautious when having a campfire and to report any wildfires they may notice to 1-888-798-FIRE (3473)

So far this year there have been six fires in the territory all of which have been human-caused.
