Crews Collaborate to Quickly Contain Blaze in Dawson

Wildland firefighters, along with members of the Dawson City volunteer fire department were quick to contain a wildfire burning near Crocus Bluff in Dawson City Sunday afternoon.

The fire, believed to be human caused, was reported at approximately 4 PM and immediately two wildland fire crews and a helicopter were deployed to the scene. They worked vigorously alongside their city counterparts and were able to quickly contain the fire, which was visible from the city.

“The response here was phenomenal,” said Klondike District Area Protection Officer Sadie Jabbar. “It was great to see such a joint effort and the fire fortunately was under control in no time. If not for the cooperation, this could have been a disaster, especially with the high winds in the area at the time.”

Because of the location of the fire and the lack of lightning in the area officials are calling the incident very suspicious.

Today, a crew will be conducting mop-up on the site and officials are optimistic the fire will soon be called out. This marks the third wildfire in the Dawson area this season.

With the recent activity there have now been 12 fires in the territory all of which have been human-caused.

Meanwhile, with increased temperatures forecast for most of the territory this week and the fire danger rating at extreme in the majority of the Yukon the public is being urged to be cautious with any kind of burning and to report any wildfires they may notice to 1-888-798-FIRE (3473).
