Lightning Ignites Old Crow's First Fire of the Season

Fire officials are monitoring a wildland fire burning approximately 30 kilometres south of the community of Old Crow. The lightning-caused fire is the first of the season in the Old Crow district and was initially detected Sunday evening.

On Monday officials flew over the site to assess the situation and at that time the fire was estimated to be seven hectares in size and quite active. Officials will continue to monitor the fire, which is burning in wet and swampy terrain.

Meanwhile, with increasing temperatures in some parts of the territory, specifically Watson Lake and Dawson, officials are urging the public to remain cautious when burning.

“Despite the recent precipitation in Whitehorse and other parts of the territory the fire danger rating is still extreme in much of the Yukon,” said Yukon Duty Officer Dave Milne. “There is lightning in the forecast and we are preparing for the possibility of increased fire activity.”

With this most recent fire there have now been 13 fires in the territory, of which, all but one have been human-caused.

The public is reminded that all burning permits are suspended in parts of the territory where the fire danger rating is moderate, high or extreme.
