Campfire Safety Urged During Bike Weekend

With an increase in campers expected in the Haines Junction area this weekend, fire officials are urging the public to be cautious with their campfires. More than 1200 cyclists have registered for the Kluane Chilkat International Bike Relay which begins Saturday morning.

“Despite the cooler temperatures and recent precipitation in the area it’s still possible for fires to get out of control if burning isn’t done properly,” said Duty Officer Al Beaver. “Human-caused fires have started the majority of the fires in the territory this season so it’s crucial the public is responsible.”

Campfire safety tips:

  • Use a proper fire pit and keep your fire under control at all times.
  • Never leave it unattended.
  • Ensure a bucket of water and a shovel is always nearby.
  • Before leaving the area make sure your campfire is completely extinguished.
  • Pour water on the fire and douse the site entirely.
  • Stir the campfire until there are no embers and the ashes are cold to touch.

This season, there have been 18 fires in the territory, burning more than 4500 hectares of forest. Of those incidents, all but five have been human-caused.

Currently the fire danger rating is low in most of the territory with the exception of Carmacks and Dawson where the rating is moderate. The public is reminded that all burning permits are suspended in parts of the territory where the fire danger rating is moderate, high or extreme.
