Current Fire Danger Ratings Wildfire Bulletin #17 June 21, 2007 - 11:30 AM Good Progress Made as Outside Resources Deployed Fire officials are reporting good progress on the most recent wildfires in the territory. The news is reassuring as increased lightning is forecast for the Central Yukon with little precipitation. No growth has been reported on the Snag Creek Fire (BC-01-07), burning approximately 13 kilometres northeast of Beaver Creek. Officials have reassessed its size and it is now 89 hectares. Thirty-five firefighters and three helicopters will continue work today. In Dawson, officials have notified the three mining camps in the area of the current fire activity in the remote wilderness zone (DA-05-07, DA-06-07, DA-07-07). The closest camp is located 14 kilometres from the fire but at this time is not threatened. The other two camps are located 20 and 21 kilometres respectively from the fire. These fires will not be actioned at this point, but will be monitored closely. Meanwhile, the 36 Type 1 Initial Attack firefighters from British Columbia have arrived in the territory and this morning were briefed by Wildland Fire Management senior staff. They are now being deployed at various districts in the territory including Haines Junction, Mayo and Dawson, in preparation for a potential increase in fire activity. The four Firecats (airtanker group), from B.C. are now being stationed in Dawson. With the fire danger rating currently extreme in the Carmacks, Mayo and Dawson fire districts and increased lightning expected in much of the territory officials are preparing for a possible increase in activity. The public is asked to do their part and be cautious with any kind of burning and report any wildfires they notice to 1-888-798-FIRE. There have been 28 fires in the territory this season, burning more than 6600 hectares of forest. -30- For Yukon Wildfire updates, call 1-800-826-4750 Current Fire Danger Ratings |
