Firefighters Quick to Action New Carmacks Fire

Firefighters working in the Carmacks fire district were quick to contain a spot size (0.1 hectare) fire burning near the Nordenskjold River, approximately 50 kilometres south of Carmacks.

The lightning-caused fire was discovered just after 1:00 p.m. Thursday afternoon by firefighters working on another fire already burning in the area. The fire was actioned by two initial attack firefighters, a helicopter and an airtanker and was contained in two hours. Today a patrol of the area will be done.

Meanwhile, crews continue to make good progress on the Snag Creek Fire (BC-01-07), burning approximately 13 kilometres northeast of Beaver Creek. Officials met all suppression objectives on Thursday and no growth has been reported on the fire estimated to be 89 hectares. 20 Alaskan Hot Shot firefighters have been removed from the fire to assist with increased fire activity in Alaska. Today, 21 firefighters will be on the fire, along with air support from two helicopters.

In Dawson, officials are continuing to monitor the three fires burning in a remote wilderness zone approximately 120 kilometres southwest of Dawson. Three mining camps in the area have been notified of the situation but at this time the camps are not threatened.

With the fire danger rating remaining extreme in the Carmacks, Mayo and Dawson fire districts and increased lightning expected in much of the territory officials have prepared for a possible increase in activity. 36 Initial Attack firefighters from across B.C. have now been deployed throughout the territory.

The public is asked to do their part and be cautious with any kind of burning and report any wildfires they notice to 1-888-798-FIRE.

There have been 30 fires in the territory this season, burning more than 11,000 hectares of forest.
