Wildfire Bulletin #19

June 24, 2007 - 8:00 PM

Lightning Ignites Multiple Starts Throughout Yukon

Staff with Yukon Wildland Fire Management, along with resources from British Columbia have been busy dealing with a rash of new fire activity. As of 8:00 PM Sunday evening, 17 new fires had been reported in the territory since Friday afternoon.

The Mayo and Dawson fire districts have seen the most activity with six and seven new incidents respectively. The largest being an approximate 830 hectare fire burning in a remote wilderness area 150 kilometres north of Dawson. This lightning-caused fire is visible from the Dempster Highway (North Kilometre 280, South Kilometre 310). Public traveling in the vicinity is asked to be vigilant of the fire activity and patient.

Other districts with weekend fire activity were Haines Junction, Ross River and Carmacks, all the result of lightning activity. Fortunately, none of these recent fires are posing a threat to residences and good progress is being reported by fire officials.

“With the forecast lighting and dry conditions we are prepared that there may be six to ten new fires each day this week,” said Duty Officer Mike Sparks. “As a result we have taken the necessary measures to ensure these current and possible new fires are dealt with efficiently.”

Two 19-person Unit Crews and an airtanker group from British Columbia arrived in the Yukon this weekend to assist the Yukon firefighters already working. They have since been deployed to the Dawson and Minto areas. These firefighting resources are in addition to the 36 Type 1 Initial Attack firefighters that were deployed to the territory earlier this week.

To aid with the current fire activity the public is asked to do their part and be cautious with any kind of burning and report any wildfires they notice to 1-888-798-FIRE.

With the recent activity there have now been 47 fires in the territory this season, burning more than 25,000 hectares of forest.
