Three New Fires Reported in Mayo

Three new fires were detected in the Mayo fire district Monday bringing the fire total in the territory to 53. All three of the incidents were lightning-caused, as has been the case for all of the recent fire activity in the Yukon.

Of the new fires reported Monday, MA-08-07, a 2.5 hectare fire burning approximately 30 kilometres east of Mayo near Van Cleves Hill received the most action. Upon discovery, three air tanker groups were dispatched as the fire was quite active.

“Despite the low fire danger rating in the area at the time the fire was still quite active,” said Mayo Duty Officer Don Hutton. “Fortunately, the work from the air was very successful and the fire was able to be contained quickly.”

Today eight firefighters will return to the fire to continue with suppression efforts. Officials expect the fire to be fully contained by late this afternoon.

The other two fires reported yesterday were both located in remote wilderness areas and are just being monitored at this time. MA-09-7 is 300 hectares and burning near the Snake River, while MA-10-07, is 0.1 hectares and located near Aberdeen Canyon.

Meanwhile, officials are continuing to make good progress on the other active fires in the territory. Cooler temperatures and precipitation has helped with their efforts. The fire danger rating is now low to moderate in much of the territory however, officials are still urging the public to be cautious with any burning and report any wildfires to 1-888-798-FIRE.

There have now been 53 fires in the territory this season burning more than 25,000 hectares of forest as a result.
