Current Fire Danger Ratings Wildfire Bulletin #21 June 28, 2007 - 11:15 AM Whitehorse Fire Quickly Extinguished Firefighters were quick to extinguish what is believed to be a lightning-caused fire in the Whitehorse fire district Wednesday afternoon. The fire, reported by a member of the public at about 3:30 p.m., was located off the Takhini River Road near Flat Creek. Two three-person crews and a helicopter were immediately dispatched and the fire was quickly contained and then extinguished. “There were some values in the area so it was important that we contained the fire quickly,” said Whitehorse Area Protection Officer Jim Kathrein. “Having a member of the public provide a detailed location of the fire was also key to quickly putting it out.” Meanwhile, three fires burning in a remote wilderness zone in the Dawson district have now been assigned fire numbers. The fires were actually first detected by satellite last week but only recently were fully-assessed and issued a fire number. This now brings the fire total for the season to 57. Two air tanker groups from British Columbia have also returned to their home base in Abbottsford and Kamloops respectively. With the fire danger rating now low to moderate in much of the territory, with the exception of the high rating in Dawson, there is no longer a need for additional air support. The public is reminded to be cautious with any burning and report any wildfires to 1-888-798-FIRE. -30- For Yukon Wildfire updates, call 1-800-826-4750 Current Fire Danger Ratings |
