Current Fire Danger Ratings Wildfire Bulletin #24 July 09, 2007 - 11:05 AM Lightning Ignites Six New Weekend Fires Dry conditions and increased lightning activity resulted in six new fires in the territory over the weekend in the Dawson, Carmacks, Mayo and Old Crow districts respectively. Of the six new incidents, most are burning in remote wilderness zones and do not pose a threat to any values at this time. The fire in Carmacks (CA-11) is 0.2 hectares in size and burning 15 kilometres east of Carmacks. First detected Friday night, a three-person Initial Attack crew and helicopter worked the fire and were able to extinguish it by Saturday morning. The Old Crow district was the busiest on the weekend with three new incidents, the most significant being fires number three and four. OC-3 is now approximately 2000 hectares and is burning 190 kilometres south-east of Old Crow near the Eagle River, roughly five kilometers from Eagle Plains Lodge. Today a crew is on site to determine if a Site Protection Plan needs to be developed. OC-4 is also being monitored closely as it is burning near a Northwestel Tower near Eagle Plains. Located approximately 210 kilometres southeast of Old Crow the two hectare fire is currently showing little activity. “Northwestel has been notified of the fire activity in the area and are aware of the situation,” said Duty Officer Michael Templeton. “Today we will have firefighters on site to evaluate the situation further.” Motorists travelling along the Dempster Highway are advised that they may notice smoke as a result of the recent fire activity in the Old Crow district. Officials are encouraging the public to be patient and vigilant of the fire activity. Meanwhile, the fires reported in the Dawson and Mayo district are both burning in remote wilderness zones and are not a current threat. DA-20 is approximately 50 hectares in size and is burning about 230 kilometres east of Dawson near the West Hungry Lake. In Mayo, MA-12 is about 100 hectares and is located near the Snake River more than 300 kilometres northeast of Mayo. With this recent activity there have now been 68 fires in the territory burning more than 30,000 hectares. -30- For Yukon Wildfire updates, call 1-800-826-4750 Current Fire Danger Ratings |
