Current Fire Danger Ratings Wildfire Bulletin #26 July 10, 2007 - 10:40 AM Sprinkler Kits Being Set Up Around Lodge Firefighters are setting up sprinklers kits this morning around Eagle Plains Lodge in an effort to provide further protection. A lightning-caused fire (OC-3), first detected Thursday night remains active and as a precautionary measure five sprinkler kits are being placed around the lodge. The fire is now estimated to be more than 2000 hectares in size. “Having these sprinkler kits in place is just a defensive measure at this time,” said Duty Officer Michael Templeton. “The fire is still over five kilometres away and not a threat at this time.” Meanwhile, the fire (OC-4), burning in a remote wilderness area of Old Crow near a Northwestel Tower is currently showing little fire activity. Sprinkler kits were placed around the tower Sunday afternoon as a preventive measure however the fire did receive some precipitation overnight. The sprinkler kits will remain around the tower until there is no longer a need. Motorists travelling along the Dempster Highway are advised that they may encounter heavy smoke and fire activity as a result of the recent fires in the Old Crow district. Officials are encouraging the public to be patient and vigilant of the fire activity. There is staff with the department of highways in the area providing information to motorists and fire officials are on the scene to provide further assistance. There have been 68 fires in the territory this season burning more than 30,000 hectares of forest.
