July 30, 2007 - 10:00 AM

Five New Fires Reported Over the Weekend

There were five new wildfires reported over the weekend in the territory all of which were caused by lightning. Of the five new incidents, four occurred in the Dawson fire district and one in the Carmacks district. Only two of the fires were actioned by Wildland Fire Management staff.

On Saturday afternoon at approximately 3:15 PM a one hectare fire (DA-32) was discovered near Kirkman Creek about 65 kilometres south of Dawson. Upon discovery, airtankers and ground crews were deployed as the fire was burning near a mining camp.

“Wildland Fire Management staff managed to quickly contain the fire and they continued to work on the fire throughout the weekend,” said Yukon Duty Officer Mike Sparks. “Initial Attack crews camped last night on site and hope to have the fire completely extinguished today or tomorrow.”

On Sunday afternoon at about 1:30 PM a small fire (DA-33) was located near Australia Creek, 65 kilometres southeast of Dawson City. A three-person initial attack crew was deployed to the fire and by the evening the blaze was extinguished.

The other incidents that occurred over the weekend all took place in remote wilderness zones and no values were threatened.

With the weekend activity there have now been 85 fires in the territory this season burning more than 44,000 hectares of forest. The public is asked to be cautious while burning and report any wildfires they notice to 1-888-798-FIRE.

Meanwhile, Wildland Fire Management staff continues to provide assistance in the Southern Lakes area as a result of the current flood situation. They will continue to do so while the need remains.
