Crews Action Two Fires in Carmacks

There were three new wildfires reported over the weekend in the territory in the Carmacks and Dawson fire districts respectively all of which were caused by lightning. Of the three new incidents, only the two burning in Carmacks were actioned. The Dawson fire (DA-35), 20 hectares in size, is burning in a remote wilderness zone, 135 kilometres south-west of Dawson, with no identified values at risk.

On Friday evening seven firefighters were deployed to a .4 hectare fire burning near Victoria Creek in the Carmacks district approximately 15 kilometres west of Carmacks. The fire, believed to be a lightning holdover start, was actioned quickly and is currently contained. It is expected it will be fully extinguished Monday.

On Saturday afternoon a member of the public reported a .3 hectare fire burning near Claire Creek, 50 kilometres east of Carmacks. Four firefighters and a helicopter were sent to the fire Saturday and Sunday.

“This fire is burning in steep terrain which had made access difficult,” said Carmacks Zone Protection Manager Mark Donovan. “Water access is also limited however our crews have done an excellent job so far keeping the fire contained.”

Firefighters will return to the site today and it is hoped the fire will be fully extinguished later this week.

With the weekend activity there have now been 93 fires in the territory this season burning more than 45,000 hectares of forest. The public is asked to be cautious while burning and report any wildfires they notice to 1-888-798-FIRE.
