Current Fire Danger Ratings Wildfire Bulletin #39 August 17, 2007 - 10:15 AM Three New Fires Push Season Total to 100 Three new wildfires were reported in the territory over the Discovery Days holiday weekend. Two of the new incidents were lightning-caused fires reported in the Dawson fire district and the other was a human-caused fire discovered in the Whitehorse district. All three fires were detected Sunday. The two fires in Dawson (DA-38, DA-39), were burning near the White River approximately 95 kilometres southwest of Dawson City. The fires were actually discovered following reports of smoke from a commercial airline flying over the area. Fortunately the fires were spot size and burning in remote wilderness zones with no immediate values at risk. The fire discovered in Whitehorse was the fifth fire of the season in this district and was located in the Golden Horn area 15 kilometres south of Whitehorse. The incident was initially responded to by the Golden Horn volunteer fire department and Wildland Fire Management then was called in for further assistance. “This fire was most likely human caused because of its location,” said Duty Officer Michael Templeton. “Fortunately the fire was quickly contained and then extinguished, however with values in the immediate area at potential risk obviously fires of this nature are a concern. With the weekend fire activity there have now been 100 fires in the Yukon this season burning more than 45,000 hectares of forest. At this time last year there were 76 fires burning more than 106,000 hectares. Currently the fire danger rating is low in most of the territory with the exception of Whitehorse, Watson Lake and Teslin where the rating is moderate. The public is reminded that all burning permits are suspended in parts of the territory where the fire danger rating is moderate, high or extreme. -30- For Yukon Wildfire updates, call 1-800-826-4750 Current Fire Danger Ratings |
