Fire Crews Respond to Fire at Little Fox Lake
Early last evening Wildland Fire Management firefighters from Whitehorse and Carmacks were dispatched to a 1.6 hectare fire north of Whitehorse at the north end of Little Fox Lake. The fire, which was reported by the public and assessed by one of WFM’s birddog aircraft, is thought to be human-caused. The Little Salmon Carmacks First Nation Crew was also dispatched to the fire. The Firecat airtankers out of Whitehorse dropped several loads of retardant to box in the fire. Fire crews will be mopping up the fire today.
Every year, half of the fires in the Yukon are caused by humans and are considered preventable. Wildland Fire Management reminds the public to be careful with open burning. Keep your fire under control and never let it spark into surrounding trees or brush. Never burn in windy conditions, or when conditions are hot and dry. Always be prepared with water and a shovel nearby, and never leave your fire until it has been completely extinguished.
The fire danger rating is currently low to high around the territory.
Yukoners are reminded that burning permits are required for the burning of brush and debris between April 1 and September 30. Please contact your local district for information on obtaining a burning permit. For general information call 867-456-3845.
Wildland Fire Management wishes to thank the public for their continued help in reporting wildfires. To report a wildfire call 1-888-798-FIRE (3473).
