Warm Weather to Increase Risk of Forest Fires

After what has seemed to be a late spring, Yukoners can finally enjoy summer temperatures this weekend. The forecast is calling for above normal temperatures throughout most of the Yukon over the weekend and into next week.

A warm and very dry air mass is sitting over the territory and will remain for several days. These weather conditions will make forest fuels extremely dry, increasing the risk of wildfires. Yukoners need to use extreme caution with any kind of fire, especially in such hot and dry conditions. Never light a fire in windy conditions, and most importantly, ensure campfires are never left unattended and that they are completely extinguished.

Wildland Fire Management is reminding people with existing burning permits to contact their local Wildland Fire Management or Client Services District office to get updated information on current conditions in their area.

The fire danger rating is currently high to extreme around the territory with the exception of Watson Lake and Teslin which are low.

Wildland Fire Management thanks the public for their continued help in reporting wildfires. If you see a wildfire, report it immediately by calling 1-888-798-FIRE (3473).
