Lightning Ignites New Fires in Dawson and Mayo

Close to 2600 lightning strikes, most of which touched down in central Yukon have resulted in four new fires in Dawson and one in Mayo. Fire crews were busy yesterday and overnight working to extinguish these fires. Dawson #1, near the Dempster/Henderson corner is being assessed today and an action plan developed to fight the fire. It is 4 hectares in size.  Dawson #2 and #3, both in the vicinity of Quebec Creek were spot fires and each had 2 person crews working on them into the evening. The DC-6 airtanker blanketed both with retardant. These fires should be called out later today.

Dawson #4, north of Dawson City and east of Wood Chopper Creek had the DC-6 airtanker and a 6 person crew working into the night to contain it. Crews will be working on that fire again today.

A .5 hectare fire near McQueston Lake in the Mayo district was fought by a 6 person crew and the Firecat airtanker group.  This fire has been contained. Two of the Watson Lake fires that were the result of lightning on June 14 have been declared out.

Wildland Fire Management officials are anticipating increased fire activity in the Mayo, Carmacks and Dawson areas as a result of yesterday’s lightning. Patrols will going out in these areas today to look for new fires. There have been 18 fires in the Yukon so far this year, most caused by lightning.

With the recent rainfall the fire danger rating in much of the territory is now low, with the exception of Carmacks and Old Crow which are both extreme. Those individuals wishing to obtain burning permits  can contact their local Fire Management or Client Services District office for information on current conditions and how to conduct a safe burn.

Wildland Fire Management thanks the public for their cooperation.
