Wildfire Bulletin #16

June 27, 2006 - 10:50 AM

Rains Slows Growth of Fire

Rain considerably slowed growth on the Mt. Hansen fire last night.  The area received seven millimeters of rain and more is expected today.  Firefighters put in cat lines yesterday at the head of the fire.

Cloudy, rainy conditions are currently preventing firefighters from being flown into the fire by helicopter.  An assessment of the fire will be done today and crews will be going in by boat to secure values situated along the Yukon River.

Conditions are expected to remain cool and rainy for the next few days, but by Friday temperatures will likely be higher and humidity will be lower throughout the territory.

The current fire danger rating is high in Ross River, moderate in Whitehorse and low throughout the rest of the territory.  There have been 35 fires in the Yukon this year.

Wildland Fire Management would like to remind the public to be extremely careful.  Never burn in windy conditions, keep a water source nearby and ensure fires are completely extinguished before leaving the area.  We would also like to thank the public for their cooperation and for continuing to report wildfires.
