Current Fire Danger Ratings Wildfire Bulletin #18 June 30, 2006 - 10:15 AM Long Weekend Brings Some Sunshine to Southern Yukon With a cool, damp June coming to a close, the long weekend weather is promising some sunnier and slightly warmer conditions in southern Yukon, at least for a few days. With warmer conditions also comes a drier forest. Yukon Duty Officer Mike Sparks is encouraging Yukoners to be fire safe this long weekend, both around the campfire and around the home. Sparks said that by taking a few simple steps such as removing branches, needles, brush and other flammable materials, homeowners can help protect their homes. Homes near or within forested areas are at increased risk from wildfires. For individual homeowners, the most effective means of reducing the risk of property damage is to eliminate flammable materials from around their homes. Also this weekend many people will be going out camping and although the current fire hazard is low to moderate, it’s important to be careful with campfires. “It’s our responsibility to use campfires safely. Keep them small and make sure they’re out completely before you leave them,” said Sparks. Meanwhile, Yukon firefighters that went to Alberta yesterday have been deployed from Ft. McMurray to a complex of fires in northern Alberta. Yukon resources will be in Alberta over the long weekend. They are not expected to return until we have an increased fire risk or the fire danger is lowered in Alberta. The resources were sent under the Mutual Aid Sharing Agreement (MARS), managed through CIFFC, the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre. Through the agreement, fire agencies can ask for assistance from other provinces and territories and can assist others as required. Wildland Fire Management would like to thank the public for continuing to report wildfires. -30- For Yukon Wildfire updates, call 1-800-826-4750 Current Fire Danger Ratings |
