Lightning Ignites Dawson's 10th Fire

Dawson recorded its 10th fire of the year last night.  The fire, believed to be lightning-caused, was reported near Gravel Lake by the Ferry Hill Tower.  Crews out of Dawson and Mayo responded to the 0.8 hectare fire.   No values were threatened by the blaze.

A public call just after midnight on Sunday morning reported smoke just off the Old Alaska Highway towards Champagne.  An initial attack crew was deployed to the area and found the fire to be cold upon arrival.  The area was coldtrailed and the fire was declared extinguished. The cause of the fire has not been determined, but it is believed to be human-caused.

Meanwhile, the firecat air tanker group exported to Alberta has been released.  However, the stormy weather in the province has so far prevented them from returning to the Yukon.  They are expected to return when the weather improves.  The four firefighters deployed to Alberta still have several days left on their 14 day contract and will likely be returning to the Yukon later this week.

Currently, there is a low fire danger throughout the territory, so Wildland Fire Management officials are looking at the possibility of sending more resources south.

The fire danger rating is currently moderate in Old Crow and low throughout the rest of the territory.  Although temperatures are expected to cool in the next few days, there is a good chance of lightning in the forecast.

There have been 47 fires so far this year, burning a total of 49,524.42 hectares

Wildland Fire Management would like to thank the public for their cooperation in continuing to report wildfires.
