Lightning Sparks Another Fire in Dawson

Lightning ignited another fire in the Dawson area last night.  Dawson 011 was reported by a nearby fire lookout tower and both air tanker groups responded.  The fire, which is about 15 hectares, is currently 75% cat-guarded and fire activity is low.  About thirteen people and one helicopter will keep working on the fire today, continuing to contain the perimeter.

There are several mining camps within three to five kilometers of the fire and it is 20 kilometers south of Dawson City.  However, no properties are threatened.  Dawson 011 is two kilometers east of the French Gulch burn from 2004.

Meanwhile fire activity on Dawson 010, the Gravel Lake fire, is currently low.  The fire is under control and crews are monitoring the status of the fire.

Warm and dry conditions are expected to continue throughout the central Yukon and more lightning is expected.  The current fire danger rating is low to moderate throughout the territory.

There have been 48 fires this year, burning a total of 49,539.42 hectares. To view a current fire map of active fires in the Yukon, visit: http://www.community.gov.yk.ca/pdf/YTOV_Public.pdf
