Fourteen Hundred Lightning Strikes Pound Territory

Over fourteen hundred lightning strikes hammered the Yukon yesterday, resulting in nine confirmed fires. The Mayo District reported six new fires. Mayo #5, near Lynx Creek is .5 hectares and is being observed. Mayo #06 and #08, near Mayo Lake and east Janet Lake are less than one hectare and are under control. Fire crews from the Carcross Tagish First Nation will be working on those two fires today.  Mayo #07, at Janet Lake is out.  Mayo #09 near Red Creek is five hectares in size and is being monitored.  Further assessment of Mayo #10, near the headwaters of Rusty Creek and Reverse Creek is being done to determine further action. It is over 50 hectares in size.

Dawson #12 is a wilderness zone fire east of Black Hill Creek and is approximately 30 hectares. There are no values being threatened by the fire and it will be monitored.
Also in Dawson, the French Gulch fire is still being worked on by 13 crews with helicopter support. Fire activity on Dawson #10 has been low the last couple of days and is being monitored.

Elsewhere, Carmacks #08, near McCabe Creek and Hoochekoo Creek is 1.5 hectares and was fought by ground crews. Crews will be working on the fire again today. There are no values being threatened at this time. And finally, Beaver Creek reported its third fire of the season near Felsemner Ridge, also in the wilderness zone and is one hectare in size.

Warm and dry conditions are expected to continue throughout the central Yukon and more lightning is expected. The current fire danger rating is low to moderate throughout the territory.

There have been 55 fires this year, burning a total of 48,801 hectares.
