Four New Fires Reported on Weekend

Close to twenty six hundred lightning strikes touched down in the Yukon over the weekend. Four new fires have been confirmed as a result of the recent lightning. Three new fires were reported in the Dawson district, all one hectare or smaller in size.  Dawson #13, near Galena Creek, and Dawson #14, at the top end of Ladue Creek are being observed. Dawson #15, south of Black Hills was fought by fire crews and is under control.  Dawson #11, the French Gulch fire is under control and is being demobilized.

Meanwhile, Mayo #10, near the headwaters of Rusty Creek and Reverse Creek is 62 hectares in size and is being worked on by four crews. There has been no new growth on the fire and crews will be in the mop-up phase today.

Old Crow reported its first fire of the season over the weekend. It is a wilderness zone fire near Gwaatlit Hill, is five hectares in size and will be observed.

Elsewhere, Beaver Creek #03 near Felsenmer Ridge has grown in size to 728 hectares. It is approximately 25 kms. northeast of Beaver Creek. The nearest point to the Alaska Highway is 15km.  Fire activity has been low the last two days, and the fire is being monitored daily. A four person crew is now in Beaver Creek in the event that there is increased fire activity. There is no immediate threat to any values from the fire at this time.  

Warm and dry conditions are expected to continue throughout the central Yukon and lightning activity will be less. The current fire danger rating is low to moderate throughout the territory.

There have been 59 fires this year, burning a total of 54,849 hectares.
