Good Weather Forecast for Dawson Music Fest

A nice sunny weekend is in the forecast for the upcoming Dawson Music Festival. Skies should be clear with temperatures in the mid twenties in the central Yukon. With these warm, dry conditions, wildfires can spread quickly, and Wildland Fire Management is reminding the public to be extremely careful with their campfires and ensure they are completely extinguished.

This past week, there have been several new fires. A spot fire was reported on Monday near the Natasaheeni Village in Carcross. Fire crews from Whitehorse, and the Firecat air tanker group worked on the fire, which was human caused. On Tuesday, a small fire was reported on an island at Little Salmon in the Carmacks District. The Little Salmon Carmacks First Nation  contract crew went in by boat and extinguished the fire, which is thought to be a holdover campfire.

Watson Lake reported its fourteenth fire of the season yesterday five km northeast of Stewart Lake.  Both the DC6 and Firecat airtanker groups were launched to control the spread of the fire. As well, a helicopter with both the Liard First Nation contract crew and YG crew were dispatched out of Watson Lake to work on the fire.  Crews will be working on the fire again today with helicopter support. No values are being threatened by the fire at this time.

Meanwhile, in Mayo, the fire near the headwaters of Rusty Creek and Reverse Creek is 62 hectares in size and is being demobilized.

Elsewhere, the fire near Felsenmer Ridge in the Beaver Creek District has grown in size to 1160 hectares. It is approximately 25 km northeast of Beaver Creek. The fire is being monitored daily and a four person crew is now in Beaver Creek in the event of increased fire activity. There is no immediate threat to any values from the fire at this time.

Warm and dry conditions are expected to continue throughout the central Yukon and lightning activity will be less. The current fire danger rating is low to moderate throughout the territory.

There have been 62 fires this year, burning a total of 80, 328 hectares.

Wildland Fire Management would like to thank the public for their cooperation in reporting wildfires.
