Wildfire Bulletin #27

July 21, 2006 - 4:00 PM

Advisory for Highway Travelers

The forest fire burning near Felsenmer Ridge in the Beaver Creek District, between Beaver Creek and U.S. customs has grown in size to 1600 hectares. It is approximately 22 km northeast of Beaver Creek.  With increased fire activity, travelers on the Alaska Highway are advised that they may encounter smoke in the area.

The fire is being monitored closely and fire crews are in Beaver Creek to do some work on the southwest perimeter of the fire. There is no immediate threat to the highway or any values at this time.

Elsewhere, a sunny weekend is in the forecast for the Dawson Music Festival. Skies should be clear with temperatures in the mid twenties in the central Yukon. With these warm, dry conditions, wildfires can spread quickly, and Wildland Fire Management is reminding the public to be extremely careful with their campfires and ensure they are completely extinguished.

The fire danger is currently low to moderate throughout the territory with the exception of Old Crow which is extreme.

There have been 62 fires this year, burning a total of 85,858 hectares.

Wildland Fire Management would like to thank the public for their cooperation in reporting wildfires.
