Current Fire Danger Ratings Wildfire Bulletin #28 July 24, 2006 - 9:40 AM Two New Fires Over Weekend Air tankers and firefighters responded to a .1 hectare fire Saturday on the Wheaton River. The fire, reported by a member of the public, was an abandoned campfire. It was declared out Saturday evening. Old Crow reported its second fire of the season south of Eagle Plains. It is two hectares in size and is being monitored. Meanwhile, the forest fire burning near Felsenmer Ridge in the Beaver Creek District, between Beaver Creek and U.S. customs has grown in size to 6000 hectares. It is approximately 16 km northeast of Beaver Creek, and about the same distance from U.S. Customs. Crews are going to continue to work on the south and west flanks of the fire to contain its progress towards the community. Wildland Fire Management is working on a plan for structural protection in Beaver Creek. There is currently no immediate threat to either the community of Beaver Creek or the Alaska Highway from the fire however travelers are advised that increased fire activity may result in smoky conditions in the area. The fire danger is currently low to high throughout the territory. There have been 64 fires this year, burning a total of 87, 607 hectares.
