Rainfall Reduces Fire Threat in Beaver Creek

Over thirty millimeters of rain have fallen in the Beaver Creek area in the last 48 hours, which has significantly reduced the fire hazard and the risk of the Felsemner Ridge fire reaching the community.

The recent rain and the forecast have allowed Wildland Fire Management to re-evaluate the resources that will be required for the next few days. As a result, the Alaskans that were scheduled to arrive today will not be required at the present time. “Given the current conditions and our forecast, we feel that our level of resources that are Yukon-based will be adequate for the next few days,” said Brian Hoover, Incident Commander for the Beaver Creek fire. “If conditions change, we still have a number of initial attack crews in the territory that can be called upon on short notice,” he added.

Today, the fire crews from the Whitehorse Fire Department and the Volunteer Fire Departments in Mt. Lorne and Ibex Valley are being released as well as the First Nation contract crew from Haines Junction. That will leave 18 firefighters in Beaver Creek as well as two helicopters.

Fire Management officials plan to do an infrared scan of the fire sometime today if the weather allows. Crews may also get out on the fireline today, again depending on weather.  Sprinkler systems that have been installed will remain in the community for about another week.

There has been very little activity on the fire, which is estimated at 8800 hectares.

Travelers are asked to call the Yukon Road Report for updated highway information, at 1-877-456-7623.

There have been 68 fires this year, burning a total of 100,320 hectares.  The current fire danger rating is low throughout the territory.
