Crews Making Good Progress on the Beaver Creek Fire

Showers and cooler temperatures this week have helped fire crews working on the Felsenmer Ridge fire northeast of Beaver Creek.

“There has been very little activity on the fire this week,” said Incident Commander, Gerry Trudeau. “The cool, damp weather is keeping the fire very quiet, and there is no visible smoke from the highway or the community.” There are still 23 firefighters in Beaver Creek, either working on the fire, hot-spotting, or dismantling the community protection systems that were put in place last week. The Felsenmer Ridge fire, which started on July 13th is approximately 8400 hectares in size.  Crews will likely remain in the community for at least another week, and will gradually wind down operations there.

Elsewhere around the Yukon, one new lightning-caused fire was confirmed in the Mayo District on Tuesday west of Kathleen Lake. It is being monitored.

The fire danger is currently low to moderate, with the exception of Carmacks, which is extreme.

There have been 73 fires this year, burning a total of 99, 897 hectares.
