Hootalinqua VFD First Responders to Mayo Road Fire

The Hootalinqua Volunteer Fire Department responded to a small fire in the area of Mayo Road and North Fork Road on the North Klondike Highway yesterday morning. Whitehorse District firefighters assisted in extinguishing the .15 hectare fire which was just outside the Whitehorse City limits on an agricultural property. The fire has been declared out.

Meanwhile three Yukon firefighters are in north central Washington State assisting on the Tripod Complex fire in the Wenatchee National Forest, south of the BC border. They left the Yukon last Thursday and after being briefed at the National Interagency Fire Centre in Boise, Idaho, they were deployed to Washington on Tuesday.

The Tripod Complex is an extremely active fire, estimated at 53,000 hectares. There are approximately 2800 personnel working on the fire, including other firefighters from Canada. Wildland fire activity has been very heavy in the western United States in recent weeks, and the National Interagency Fire Centre (NIFC), the US counterpart to Canada’s Interagency Forest Fire Centre or CIFFC, put out a request for assistance last week. Firefighters from Saskatchewan and BC are assisting on numerous fires in the western states, in addition to fire specialists from New Zealand and Australia.

All three of the Yukon firefighters are working as strike team leaders. They are expected to be in the U.S. for at least two weeks.

The fire danger rating is currently low throughout the territory with the exception of Ross River which is moderate.  Wildland Fire Management reminds the public to be careful with campfires and open burning.

There have been a total of 76 fires this year, burning a total of 106,128 hectares.

Wildland Fire Management would like to thank the public for continuing to report wildfires.
