Four Yukon Firefighters to Battle Blazes in Oregon

Four Yukon firefighters left Whitehorse this morning for west central Oregon. After flying into Portland, they will then head out to the Shake Table fire which is a complex of nine fires in the Malheur National Forest. Two of the firefighters will be working as Division Supervisors, and the other two will be Task Force Leaders. They are expected to be in Oregon for about 14 days.

A request came yesterday from the State of Oregon via the Northwest Wildland Fire Protection Agreement, known as the Northwest Compact; a cooperative operating plan that facilitates assistance in preparedness and Wildland fire fighting between member agencies.

The Yukon firefighters will be joining the estimated 200 other personnel on the Shake Table Complex, which has already forced road closures in several areas. Firefighters are up against steep, rugged terrain filled with heavy forest fuels, making containment difficult.

Meanwhile three other Yukon firefighters are still in north central Washington State assisting on the Tripod Complex fire in the Wenatchee National Forest, south of the BC border. They left the Yukon last week and have been working on the fire since Tuesday.

The Tripod Complex is estimated at 55,000 hectares, however cooler temperatures have reduced fire activity somewhat over the last 24 hours. There are over 2700 personnel working on the fire which is still threatening residences and other structures.

Here at home, the 77th fire of the season was confirmed in the Kluane region yesterday. It is a wilderness zone fire near Gladstone Creek and is estimated at .03 hectares. Fire Management officials will continue to monitor the human caused fire.

The fire danger rating is currently low throughout the territory with the exception of Whitehorse, which is moderate.  Wildland Fire Management reminds the public to be careful with campfires and open burning.
