Additional Firefighters Requested to Fight Oregon Fires

Two Yukon firefighters left Whitehorse over the Labour Day weekend for west central Oregon  to the Shake Table fire. They will be joining the four other Yukon firefighters that were sent there late August. They are expected to be in Oregon for about 14 days.

The request came  from the State of Oregon via the Northwest Wildland Fire Protection Agreement, known as the Northwest Compact; a cooperative operating plan that facilitates assistance in preparedness and Wildland fire fighting between member agencies.

The Yukon firefighters will be joining the estimated 1450 other personnel on the Shake Table Complex, which is threatening values and has forced numerous road closures in the Malheur National Forest. Overnight lightning activity resulted in five new fires, bringing the number of fires in the complex up to fifteen. The fire is approximately 5900 hectares.  Firefighters are up against steep terrain and are working in 90 degree temperatures.

Meanwhile three other Yukon firefighters arrived home from north central Washington State on the weekend. They were assisting on the Tripod Complex fire in the Wenatchee National Forest. It is burning approximately four kms from the US/Canada border and is being monitored closely by the BC Forest Service.  Over the weekend, another Washington fire, the Tatoosh fire, crossed over into BC and is burning between Manning and Cathedral Parks. Heavy smoke is making it difficult to determine the exact size and location of the fire, and conditions are too hazardous to deploy firefighters.

Here at home, no new fires were reported over the long weekend. The fire danger rating is currently low throughout the territory. Wildland Fire Management reminds the public to be careful with open burning and that burning permits are required between April 1 and September 30.
