Yukon Firefighters Return Home from Oregon

Six Yukon firefighters that have been battling wildfires in Oregon returned home on the weekend.  Four of the firefighters have been out of the territory since mid-August. That will leave four Yukoners still in the US fighting fires in Oregon. They are expected back home September 26th.

The forest fire situation has moderated somewhat in the western US, and also in British Columbia. Firefighters from B.C. and Saskatchewan have headed to Ontario to help with the forest fire situation there. Resources from the US have also been mobilized to assist in Ontario which remains warm and dry. As yet, there have been no requests for support from the Yukon from the Canadian Interagency Fire Centre (CIFFC) to assist in Ontario.

Here in the Yukon, a new fire was reported over the weekend. The Marsh Lake Volunteer Fire Department responded to a small brush fire near Tarfu Creek and quickly extinguished it. Fire officials suspect it was a woodcutters fire and will be checking it again today.

With the 2006 fire season winding down and officially coming to a close on September 30, Yukoners are reminded that burning permits are required until the end of September.  Wildland Fire Management is asking the public to be cautious with any open burning.  Whether cutting wood, or hunting, fishing or camping always make sure fires are completely extinguished and cold to the touch.

There have been 79 fires this season. Fifty six fires were caused by lightning and twenty-three were person caused fires. Wildfires in the Yukon burned approximately 106,000 hectares in 2006.
