Wildfire Bulletin #10

6/14/2006 - 9:20 AM

Firefighters Respond to Two Local Fires Tuesday

Whitehorse city firefighters responded to fire in the Copper Ridge subdivision last evening. The fire was in the green belt off of Falcon Drive. A 3 person Wildland Fire Management crew assisted city crews and mopped up the .1 hectare fire.

Also yesterday, quick action by the Wildland Fire Management crews and the Ibex Valley Volunteer Fire Department stopped a .2 hectare fire from becoming a lot larger. A public call at about 10:00 a.m. Tuesday from a resident on Echo Valley Rd., just outside the Whitehorse City limits got firefighters into action quickly.  By 10:45 the fire had been contained. The Electra L-188 airtanker was dispatched, but a retardant drop wasn’t necessary.  What started the fire is still being investigated, however it has been determined that it was human-caused.

This is the third human caused fire in the past two days, in, or close to communities. “These fires close to our communities can result in high financial loss as well as risk to property, homes, wildlife and people,” said Mike Sparks, Head of Fire Management.

With summer holidays here, parents should remind their children of the dangers of playing with matches. “Our fire hazard is still high to extreme in many parts of the territory, and in these conditions fires can ignite and spread very quickly, that could take out a subdivision or an entire community,” he added.

Wildland Fire Management has extra crews in high to extreme fire hazard areas including Carmacks, Mayo, Dawson, Haines Junction and Watson Lake.

Wildland Fire Management thanks the public for their assistance in reporting wildfires.
