Stress reactions are normal and most will pass with time. Most stress reactions will have subsided within three to four weeks of the critical incident. There are things you can do to help cope, process your emotions and feel like yourself again.

  • Do expect the incident to bother you. This is normal.
  • Do maintain a good diet. Regular meals and healthy foods help your body recover.
  • Do avoid alcohol and drugs. Don’t try to numb your reaction.
  • Do take time for leisure activities and exercise. Exercise releases endorphins in the brain.
  • Do get rest.
  • Do remind yourself these reactions are normal. Be kind to yourself and allow time to heal.
  • Do spend time with family, friends and co-workers. Tell them how they can help you.
  • Do ask for help at work. Talk to your supervisor about changes to your work schedule or duties; request a debrief; or ask your partner to talk through the incident.
