Apply to be a wildland firefighter

Check the Career Centre to apply for available seasonal positions with Wildland Fire Management.

The application process begins in October/November each year. Initial attack crews are hired throughout the territory and accommodations are not provided.


To be a wildland firefighter you must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen or be able to work in Canada legally. 
  •  Have a class 5 Yukon driver’s license.
  •  Meet the Physical Fitness Standards.
  •  Have experience living or working in a wilderness environment.
  • Post-secondary education in Natural Resources Management or a related field is an asset.
  • Candidates with a valid Emergency Medical Responder certificate are given preference.

Conditions of employment


Upon hire you are required to:

  • Get certified in standard First Aid or CPR C.
  • Complete the Yukon Crew Member Training course.
  • Get medical clearance and maintain a time of 14:30 on the WFX-FIT test.
  • Complete a Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire and informed consent document.



Training given through Wildland Fire Management:

  • Chainsaw maintenance and operation
  • Restricted Operator Certificate with Aeronautical Qualification
  • WHIMIS and Transportation of Dangerous Goods
  • ATV/utility vehicle
  • Incident Command System
