Wildland Fire Management seasonal employment

Wildland Fire Management begins recruiting for the next fire season early each fall. Positions are posted in the Yukon government Career Centre.

Initial attack crews are hired for Watson Lake, Teslin, Whitehorse, Haines Junction, Carmacks, Ross River, Mayo, and Dawson City. Accommodation is not provided.

Candidates for seasonal employment with initial attack crews must:

  • be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant with legal entitlement to work in Canada
  • have a Class 5 Yukon driver’s licence
  • be prepared to meet Physical Fitness Standards for Type 1 - Wildland Fire Fighters (WFX-FIT)

Conditions of employment with an initial attack crew require:

  • Standard First Aid Certification or CPR “C”
  • successful completion of the Yukon Crew Member Training course
  • medical clearance
  • pass and maintain a 14:30 minute level of the WFX-FIT test for Type 1 Wildland Fire Fighter. A Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q) and informed consent document are required before the WFX-FIT.

Training will be provided in:

  • chainsaw maintenance and operation
  • Restricted Operator Certificate with aeronautical qualification (radio operator’s licence)
  • Fire Management
  • WHIMIS/Transportation of Dangerous Goods
  • ATV/utility vehicle
  • Incident Command System
